T h e   S c h o o l   o f   B a i a   M a r eWalter Friedrich photo

Walter Friedrich has been shaped and perfected as artist at the School of Baia Mare (Nagybanya), where in 1899 the third Free Painting School in Europe was founded under the guidance of the famous painters Hallasy Simon, Reti Istvan, Ferenczy Karoly, Thorma Ianos, Ivanyi-Grunvwald Bela.

This school was of a great significance for the European painting at the beginning of the 20th century, promoting the “plein air” style.
In time, this free picture School gave birth to a Painters’ community still living today and where the distinctive style of the forerunners can be noticed as a guiding line.
The artist’s graphics belong to dramatic expressionism and the painting follows basically the expressionism – post impressionist.
